Western Estonia birding and back home 11.5.2014

Again quite late morning after having fun yesterday. After breakfast we drove to cape Pösaspea to have some sea watch. Pösaspea is cape after very little "village" called Spithami. In the fields of Spithami we had about 40 Whinchats and lots of Northern Wheatears. Of course we checked all the birds because possibility of some other Stone Chat, but not any today. WE continued our driving to the cape.

Kestrel.

Before i even had time to take my telescope out of the car Timo found awesome White-winged Tern flying near the shore. Scarce bird in Western Estonia and always nice to have these.
Because of the late morning migration was not so massive.. Some Red-throated Divers and Black-throated Divers, some flocks of Velvet Scoters, Black Scoters going north. One Rock Pipit around and other common stuff of course. Here is some photos.

Huge flock of Long-tailed Ducks were lying quite near.

Flock of Barnacles going.

White-winged Tern, bird of the day.

Common Ringed Plover.

After some time we went back to the Spithami fields and this time we had male Red-backed Shire, more Whinchats and Common Redstart.

Also this kind of monster around! My first good pic of Roe Deer.

Red-backed Shrike.

Male Whinchat.
After Spithami we checked Dirhami harbor near by. Ortolan Bunting was best bird there.
Soon we drove back to Linnamäe to get our stuff. Tuula left also and we went to paslepa make some raptor watch. Montagu´s Harriers also there and lots of White-tailed Eagles. Overall it was quite dead and after checking some places we continued our drive towards Tallin and back home.

Male Montagu´s Again.

In Tallin we made some shopping and later our ship left towards Helsinki.
We had awesome trip this time. Of course Egyptian Vulture was THE highlight, but also it was super nice to spend time with Timo and Jände. We had lost of laughing and jokes during our drivings and i wish we can make another trip very soon. Thanks for the company guys.

Estonia continues. 10.5.2014

Next morning we woke up quite late and our mission was looking the Egyptian Vulture again to get some photos and get news for the possible twitchers. From our parking lot we heard Ichterine Warbler, Nuthach and Marsh Tit. We drove around the area but in four hours we saw only lots of other raptors. Many Montagu´s Harriers around including one pair with active displaying same time with Marsh Harrier pair. Male flew quite close few times and i got decent photo of it.
Also flock of 21 White Storks, one Lesser Spotted Eagle, Buzzards, Hobby and Hen Harrier.

Almost like in Israel! Flock of White Storks.

Montagu´s Harrier male.

Female Western Marsh Harrier.
After noon we continued driving to west and towards Pärnu. During our drive was not so many birds and we arrived after three hours of driving. Back to Estonia 8.5-9.5.2014

Me, my uncle Jan and our friend Timo arrived to Estonia yesterday evening. Long drive to eastern part of the country with some nice birds. We had dinner somewhere there and Timo noticed Red-breasted Flycatcher calling quite near! Also Black Woodpecker in same place giving some good views. Along our drive we had about 5000 Geese all over the eastern area. When we finally arrived to our hostel we had only 3 hours time to sleep before we went to check if we could hear some Owls.

Estonian landscape trough car window.

Today we woke up after those three hours and we were full of energy of course. No Owls today but we had superb concert of Nightingales, Cuckoos, Thrushes and had some good views of female Western Capercaillie. In that light i had no change to had proper photos of the Capercaillie, but here is one shot.

Female Western Capercaillie.

So, after forest we continued to the shore of Vasknarva, which is one of the most closest places of Russia in Estonia. Only narrow rived separates these two countries there.
Lots of birds in the area including some goodies like Black-tailed Godwit, Black Terns, Great Bittern and about 2500 Geese (most Greater White-fronted Geese).

Black-tailed Godwit.

Black Tern with snack.

Opposite shore belongs to Russia and i was standing in Estonia.

Beautiful landscape of Vasknarva.

We spend about three hours in Vasknarva before rain came and we had to move. We had short coffee break and then we drove around the county checking some raptor watch places.
Finally we arrived to Laagna which is very nice open place with huge potential to see some rare birds of prey. Timo did huge work earlier to scan all the places in the area and trying to find "perfect" place for the raptors.
First part of the watch was two hours and we counted one Black Kite, one Peregrine Falcon, three Montagus Harriers, 12 Sparrow Hawks, six Marsh Harriers, four Common Buzzards, one Lesser Spotted Eagle, fifteen Common Swifts, flock of six Turtle Doves and about 5000 migrating geese.
After lunch we continued the watch and we had one Black Kite, one Rough-legged Buzzard, five Sparrow Hawks, one Kestrel, few Buzzards and one Marsh Harrier.
In the area there was flock of 12 Hawfinches which is nice number. Black kite is normally quite rare in Estonia so two birds in one afternoon is very nice number! Today was also Whinchat day. Around the area there was clearly new comers and males tried to conquer their territories.

The raptor view.

Earlier today we got message that Alpine Accentor was re found from Suursadam, Hiiusmaa (W-Estonia).
It was first seen at 20th of April so after long time the bird was there again.
I am still waiting my first Alpine Accentor so we decided to leave and move closer before twitch the bird tomorrow.

I was driving and suddenly the road was closed and there was some signs to take detour. So we had to take longer route to Haapsalu which was our destination.
After 20 minutes driving the detour Timo and Jände started to talk about some strange raptor flying above the field near by. It turned out to be Egyptian Vulture! Bird continued behind the woods and we tried to follow it without any luck.. We were sure about id of the bird so we put message in Estonians alarm system.
Tomorrow we are trying to find it again to get some pictures.
Anyway, amazing bird and only three previous records in Estonia!

During our search we saw this interesting Siberian Gull looking bird feeding on the field.

Possible Siberian Gull.

Wow, what a day. 22 hours without sleep and still two days left. Wish us luck that we can find the Vulture tomorrow and others can also see it!

Kentish Plover in Espoo and other spring birds 1.5-2.5.2014

Yesterday i was going to have nice brunch with my friends and family when i noticed message in my phone.
"Kentish Plover in Espoo" very nice start i thought. Because my night shift i noticed this few hours late.
I was unable to cancel the brunch so i went there and actually had so good time that i forgot the bird first.
Then i checked our alarm system again and it was still present. I loaned my mothers car i drove to Espoo quite fast. Luckily bird stayed that evening and i got my Fin-tick number 299.
Here is two photos of the bird.

Phone scoping sucks.

Kentish Plover.

Bird was quite far away so i had to use my phone trough telescope.

Only 84 records in Finland and not sure how many in Helsinki area, but anyway very rare bird.
Today i still had my mothers car so i went to Maari bird tower very early. It was super cold.. Little bit minus degrees but birds showed well. Lost of waders including 8 Spotted Redshanks, Temminck´s Stint, lost of Wood Sandpipers, Ringed and Little Ringed Plovers, few Greenshanks and Whimbrel.
Best bird was anyway female Citrine Wagtail.

Common Crane.

Maari meadow.

After Maari i went to Suomenoja. Same birds every year but i guess it is nice to make even one visit every spring. Lots of Slavonian Grebes, Pochards etc. Golden Eyes had already some chicks.

When i came even the Mute Swans bowed to me.

Common Pochard.

Slavonian Grebe.

Suomenoja.

Golden Eye chicks.

White Wagtail.

Nice day, lost of sun, cold, but fun. Accidentally rhyme there.
Next week i will try to go somewhere. Have a nice weekend everybody and i wish good sightings to all of you.
